About Zumi

Zumi aboutSince 2007, Zumi Vance has been crafting and perfecting her style of bodywork she calls "The Sterkenburg Effect", which uses deep tissue techniques, trigger point therapy and myofascial release work together to 'release' holding patterns in the muscle, causing a 're-align' within the body; restoring flow and balance to the system. She applies this principle to her specialties of TMJ-relief, back, neck and shoulder issues.

Zumi completed her massage certification at the Massage School of Santa Monica and has taken continuing education at the Institute of Psycho-Structural Balancing and the Healing Hands Institute. During this time Zumi interned with esteemed healer and bodyworker, Bob Harris, whom she considers the "Mr. Miyagi of Massage".  People who experience the Sterkenburg Effect often express that this bodywork is unlike anything they've experienced before, exceeding the effectiveness of other modalities they've tried including chiropractic, physical therapy and acupuncture.

Zumi’s Methods

Deep Tissue Massage

Ideal for the active and over-worked body, deep tissue massage targets adhesions, commonly known as "knots", that build up in muscles, tendons, and ligaments.  Deep tissue targets these adhesions to relieve pain and stiffness associated with this build-up and to invite blood to circulate more effectively.

Trigger Point Therapy

Zumi is particularly intuitive when it comes to locating areas of tightness.  A trigger point is a tight area within muscle tissue.  With deep breathing, application of pressure, and release, Zumi alleviates sources of pain and other satellite points of stress.

Myofascial Release

This method of bodywork employs gentle, yet sustained pressure on connective tissue.  This type of massage is used to eliminate discomfort and restore full range of motion.

Cranio-Sacral Therapy

This method relieves tension and returns the body to balance with gentle manipulations of the skull.  This therapy is known to harmonize the natural rhythm in the central nervous system.

Energy Movement

With breath and touch, Zumi channels and circulates energy as an integral part of her bodywork.

What Clients Say About Zumi

My experience with Zumi Vance and The Sterkenberg Effect started after I had already scheduled Lateral Release Arthroscopy on my knees.  The X-rays showed my kneecaps to be 33 degrees off horizontal, and the surgeon said that is why my knees ached and gave out unexpectedly.  The first time I visited Zumi I told her about my knees, and was delighted that by the time my session had ended, my knees felt stable, trustworthy, and free from pain.  I cancelled the surgery. That was five years ago and my knees are still good!

Seeing Zumi for a massage was extremely relaxing both physically and mentally. I told her that the massage felt like reverse yoga. It was like in yoga when I’m holding a pose that is painful but in a good way…But this time, instead of me holding a pose, she was pushing, kneading and stretching my body. The most unique part was her massaging my jaw which made my jaw and head feel much less tense. She is also a very warm, sincere and knowledgable person who explained what she was doing and wanted to make me feel as good as possible.

In Los Angeles, the city of the active lifestyle, massage should not be regarded as a luxury, but as an essential. When do you empty yourself of your physical stresses? When do you give back to your body what you demand from it? We all have a stake in our bodies functioning well, whether we are an athlete, a chef, office manager, student, or actor. Zumi is extremely strong for her stature and will surprise you with her intuition.  She hones in on specific spots. I always feel her studio feeling lighter, less stressed, and more lucid than ever before.

Relief from pain! Once again experiencing the joy of walking in nature! As a physician Board Certified in Integrative Holistic Medicine, I have been involved with a myriad of great healers and bodyworkers. After years of wincing and limping from pain, Zumi is the first to have me walking freely and joyfully. Her ability to focus her healing energy through the knowledge of her hands allows her to find exactly the right place in exactly the right way. Zumi is truly remarkable and a gift to anyone fortunate enough to experience healing with her. I recommend her completely.
